Why do reports have different totals for the same date range?

Transaction totals for Reports and Batch pages are aggregated using the batch process date. Whereas transaction totals in Recent pages are based on transaction date.

Here is an example of the potential differences:

To celebrate New Year’s Eve a restaurant is open until 2:00 a.m. on January 1, 2018. They process their batch just before closing up around 3:00 a.m. January 1, 2018.

The batch they just closed contains transactions from both December 31, 2017 (before midnight) as well as transactions made during the first two hours of January 1, 2018.

The transactions ran on December 31st that were processed in the batch at 3 a.m. on January 1st 2018 will NOT be included in the Cumulative and Year over Year reports for 2017 because they are based off of the date and time when the batch is processed. Thus the 2017 reports may under represent totals from the end of 2017. Similarly the Cumulative and Year over Year reports for 2017 may include transactions from 2016 that were not batched until 2017 thus over representing the transactions that were made at the beginning of 2017.

Using the Recent Transaction Results page and selecting "Last Year" from the "All Dates" dropdown will show results based entirely on transaction date regardless of the time and date the batch was processed in.
